My presentation will be on the once famous, Carlotta: The Lady Aeronaut aka Mary Myers, who with her husband, Carl Myers, an aerospace engineer, designed and created state-of-the-art balloons. Carlotta Myers was known as “the most expert aeronaut of her day” and holds many records including being the first woman in the U.S. to fly and pilot her own craft. By the time she retired in 1891, she had completed more ascents than any woman or man living. In addition to being a test pilot for the balloons, Mary holds several patents with her husband. She also sewed the balloons, served as a lab tech, and a bookkeeper for the business. Her flare for aerobatics and showmanship drew crowds of over 15,000 people as she flew alone and even reached heights no one else had managed. She is a part of the Smithsonian’s Women in Aviation History in the Air and Space Museum, but she is largely forgotten even in the town of Frankfort. In fact, her home, The Balloon Farm, is up for auction and has fallen into disrepair.

When we talk about careers in aviation, we tend to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) related jobs. We focus on the airplane itself and the brilliant engineers who design it, the pilots who fly it and the technicians who maintain it. But a career in aviation can be much, much broader than that. Aviation is a great career for people who have the passion for aviation, but whose strengths lie in running the business, managing the balance sheet, selling the products and services, negotiating contracts with customers, and managing the supply chain. And, it is comprised of commercial, defense/government, and private sectors. There are literally hundreds of skills that are required to support the aviation infrastructure.

Working with NASA on humankind’s journey to Mars is important work, and a lot is riding on our success. You’ve likely seen the images in school and documentaries about the last time we sent humans to deep space – to the moon. Since then, we’ve sent people about 200 miles above the Earth to live on the space station. But no one has gone farther since Apollo 17. Now, we’re going back to the moon – and beyond to deep space.
You’ll remember that those early photos portrayed almost all men. Don’t let that fool you. There were women involved in sending men to the moon. They were filling important roles. But they weren’t visible. Today, women are in every aspect of engineering, research, science, and leadership, and we’re working every day to build on that success.

Many of us are guilty of saving multiple iterations of presentations, spreadsheets, word documents, photos, videos and hundreds of files that contain general information. We gather and hoard this data both on our computers and on our company servers, sometimes for years or even decades in the off chance that we might look at some earlier revision of a final copy of some obscure but “important” file. This Education Session will examine the relationship between data hoarding and a digital footprint. We will discuss the effect that a large digital footprint has on our business, professional and personal lives. We will examine the factors that contribute to expanding digital footprints, the costs that are incurred, and ways to reduce your digital footprints – all of them.
