All systems go for EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2019

For the twelfth year, women attending EAA AirVenture will enjoy a show within a show as a host of WomenVenture activities take place. EAA WomenVenture is an annual celebration of women from all facets of the aviation community.

Activities are scheduled during the week of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh (July 22-28, 2019) to provide women the opportunity to connect with other women who love aviation and build camaraderie within the EAA and WAI communities.

WAI’s Connect Breakfast, co-sponsored by Avemco and United Airlines, takes place on Wednesday, July 24, starting at 8 a.m., and held at the Paul H. Poberezny Conference Center (“PHP Tent”). This event features former naval aviator and Southwest Captain Tammie Jo Shults who will share her story of safely landing Southwest Airlines flight 1380 and talk about her upcoming book Nerves of Steel.

Tickets for the WAI Connect Breakfast may be purchased online for $17 each until July 21 (purchase tickets here: https://www.wai.org/events/wai-connect-breakfast-eaa-airventure), and $20 onsite, as space permits, at the WAI booth, Hangar B-2041.

The annual WomenVenture group photo takes place later that morning. Women are asked to gather early in Boeing Plaza for the 11 a.m. photo. For the photo, participants in WomenVenture are urged to wear their free, limited-edition purple EAA WomenVenture T-shirt. You must register for your complimentary T-shirt in advance to ensure that you receive your requested size. T-shirt pick up will begin on Monday morning at 8 a.m. at your specified location – either in the EAA AirVenture Welcome Center or at the WAI booth in Hangar B-2041. (register for your t-shirt here: https://www.eaa.org/airventure/features-and-attractions/special-events/womenventure).

Following the Boeing Plaza group photo, a WomenVenture Power Lunch will take place in Theater in the Woods, starting at 11:30 a.m. The speaker at the lunch is U.S. Air Force Colonel Kim “Killer Chick” Campbell.  Tickets are $5 each and include lunch, and registration is required. (Purchase your EAA Power Lunch Ticket here: https://www.eaa.org/airventure/features-and-attractions/special-events/womenventure).

WomenVenture Wednesday concludes with an evening program, also at Theater in the Woods. The theme is Celebrating Powerful Pilots, moderated by retired Lt. Col. Olga Custodio, a former T-38 instructor who was the first female Hispanic military pilot in the U.S. Air Force and is now retired from American Airlines.

Gen. Maryanne Miller, commander of Air Mobility Command and the first four-star general in the Air Force Reserve, will also speak along with Dr. Eileen Bjorkman, the U.S. Air Force deputy director of Test and Evaluation and author of The Propeller Under the Bed as well as Col. Kim Campbell, a professor at the U.S. Air Force Academy and former A-10 pilot who survived an incident over Iraq in 2003 and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Other speakers are Capt. Bebe O’Neil, a USAF Academy grad and United Airlines system chief pilot, and Capt. Lorraine Morris, a United Airlines check airman, captain on EAA’s B-17 Aluminum Overcast, and avid aircraft restorer.
