Funds used for Girls in Aviation Day and Aviation for Girls magazine

Women in Aviation International received a $12,000 grant from the International Society of Transport Aircraft Training (ISTAT) Foundation, which funds educational programs that advance commercial aviation. This is the fourth year that WAI has received an ISTAT Foundation grant.

Worldwide outreach scheduled for October 13, 2018

Now in its fourth year as a global event, Girls in Aviation Day is designed to introduce and educate girls 8 to 17 years of age on the many career choices and lifestyle possibilities offered by the aviation/aerospace industry. In addition to over 50 Girls in Aviation events which will be presented from coast to coast here in the United States, the international chapters in WAI’s network will ensure Girls in Aviation Day is celebrated around the globe.

Now in its second decade, WomenVenture, a week-long social and networking event for women during EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, showcases the hundreds of women at AirVenture for whom aviation is a way of life. More than a thousand women gathered in Boeing Plaza today for WomenVenture’s annual group photo, with most participants wearing their red WomenVenture t-shirts.

Start applying for 108 scholarships!

At WAI’s 30th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference, at least 108 individual scholarships equaling $565,000 will be awarded. As is the tradition, these scholarships are available for both flight training and scholastic funding with specific scholarships earmarked for nearly every aspect of the aviation and aerospace community.

Celebrated worldwide, Girls in Aviation Day is now in its fourth year as a global event and is designed to introduce and educate girls 8 to 17 years of age on the many career choices and lifestyle possibilities offered by the aviation/aerospace industry.

June 18, 2018 –Now in its 11 th year, WomenVenture, a partnership between EAA and Women in Aviation International, will take place at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh all week long. Starting on Monday, July 23, 2018, AirVenture’s opening day, is a WomenVenture ice cream social, sponsored by Endeavor Air. Registration is requested (at eaa.org) for this event, held in Forum Building 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Wednesday begins with WAI’s annual Connect Breakfast, sponsored by Avemco and MzeroA.com, held this year in EAA’s PHP tent just outside the main gate, beginning at 8 a.m. This is a new location for the breakfast. “We’ll start your day with networking and inspiration,” says Dr. Chabrian. Lt. Col. (retired) Olga E. Custodio, the first female Hispanic U.S. military pilot, and Dianne White, executive director of Malibu/M-Class Owners & Pilots Association, are the featured speakers. As the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) celebrated its 75 th Anniversary Homecoming at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, members of Women in Aviation International and others in the aviation community honored those pioneering World War II women who have passed by visiting and decorating their graves during Memorial Day weekend.

A contingent led by WAI Director of Communications Kelly Murphy decorated WASP graves in Arlington National Cemetery. A photo of each individual grave was then tweeted with the hashtag #HonoringTheWASP.

Women in Aviation International members will be #HonoringTheWASP over Memorial Day weekend by visiting their graves and leaving an appropriate decoration in the form of flowers or other remembrances.

In response to media inquiries following the Southwest Flight 1380 incident, Women in Aviation International (WAI) provides the following information: According to Federal Aviation Administration data , as of December 31, 2017 (the most recent available), 42,694 women hold a pilot certificate, representing 7 percent of the total pilot population. Of these female pilots, 6,994 women hold an Air Transport Pilot certificate. The number of female pilots in the United States has been slowly but steadily increasing in recent years. The 29th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference accomplished its goal to Connect. Engage. Inspire. at Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada, March 22-24, 2018.

"Our annual conference covers serious topics and provides crucial career guidance, but its strength is in the celebration of so many like-minded women who come together to share their passion for aviation and aerospace,” said Women in Aviation International (WAI) President Dr. Peggy Chabrian.
