“Tap into the Drone Market” is a free seminar hosted by Women in Aviation International (WAI). Open to the public, this seminar is scheduled for Friday, March 23, 2018, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, Convention Room C4 and is one session of WAI’s multi-day annual conference, held this year in Reno.

This session, led by industry experts, is designed to educate people on safe and responsible operations of drones, and includes information on license requirements, best business practices, and recruiting staff.

Hiring Briefings Front and Center at WAI Reno Conference

Aviation professionals in search of their next opportunity will want to attend the 29 th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference, March 22-24, 2018, at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. Those attendees looking for their next job will be a step ahead of other applicants after attending a hiring briefing presented by exhibiting aviation and aerospace companies, being held all three days of the Conference. During a Hiring Briefing, companies outline their basic application procedures, discuss current positions available along with their requirements. Within the framework of a 45-minute briefing, questions are asked and answered.

Statement by Women in Aviation International President Dr. Peggy Chabrian on Current Legislation

I direct your attention to bipartisan legislation introduced in the Senate by Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and Susan Collins (R-ME) titled Promoting Women in the Aviation Workforce Act of 2017. According to a news release issued by Senator Duckworth’s office, this legislation would:

Express the sense of Congress that the aviation industry should explore all opportunities to encourage and support women to pursue a career in aviation; Direct the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to create and facilitate a Women in Aviation Advisory Board to promote organizations and programs that provide education, training, mentorship, outreach, and recruitment of women in the aviation industry; and

Direct the FAA to submit a report to Congress on common trends that discourage women from pursuing aviation careers; expanding existing scholarship opportunities for women in aviation; and coordinating professional training and recruitment programs.

WAI Announces Pioneer Hall of Fame Inductees for 2018

Women in Aviation International (WAI) has selected the 2018 inductees for its International Pioneer Hall of Fame. These three women will be honored at the 29th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference, which will be held March 22-24, 2018, at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Reno, Nevada. The ceremony will take place at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2018, prior to the conference’s closing Celebration Dinner.

$634,000 in WAI Scholarships Available for 2018

Deadline approaches to apply

Two deadlines are approaching for individuals interested in applying for a Women in Aviation International (WAI) scholarship for 2018. In order to apply, you must be a WAI member as of November 1, 2017. Scholarship applications must be submitted online or postmarked no later than November 13, 2017. All applications may be submitted online at www.WAI.org and applicants are allowed to apply for up to three scholarships.

Third Successful International Outreach Completed with Girls in Aviation Day 2017

Girls in Aviation Day Now Scheduled for 2018

On September 23, 2017, 74 Girls in Aviation Day events were held by WAI chapters and corporate members, including 15 international chapters, 8 corporate members and 16 collegiate chapters. International events were held in Australia, Botswana, Brazil, Cameroon, Canada, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Switzerland, and Zambia.

Drawing from the local communities including Girl Scouts, church groups, and outreach to schools, WAI estimates that over 9,700 girls participated in 2017 Girls in Aviation Day.

Plans Finalized for WAI Girls in Aviation Day – All Systems Go for Saturday!

Corporate WAI members join chapters to sponsor events

Women in Aviation International’s network of more than 110 chapters will be joined on Saturday, September 23, 2017, by some WAI corporate members to produce Girls in Aviation Day events. Celebrated worldwide, Girls in Aviation Day is designed to introduce and educate girls up to 17 years of age on the many career choices and lifestyle possibilities offered by the aviation/aerospace industry.

“Girls in Aviation Day has been embraced by the entire aviation community including pilots, airlines, aviation museums, FBOs, flight schools, colleges and universities, government officials and aviation businesses,” says WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. “This community effort speaks highly to the commitment we all feel to share our passion for aviation and create a diverse future aviation workforce.”

United Airlines Supports WAI’s Girls in Aviation Day as Major Participant

Five United locations have planned events

United Airlines will roll out the red carpet for local community girls at five United Airlines locations across the United States on September 23, 2017, as part of the Women in Aviation International (WAI) Girls in Aviation Day events. Through a variety of experiences and activities, United Airlines will introduce these girls to the excitement of a major airport while they learn the various career possibilities open to them in aviation.

“These lucky girls will get a behind-the-scenes view of the operations of a major airline at a large airport,” says WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. “But the bonus is that through United’s efforts, the girls will meet and get to know the people who keep an airline running from different departments.”

WAI Receives $10,000 Grant from ISTAT

Funds to expand distribution of Aviation for Girls magazine, promote aviation careers

Women in Aviation International received a $10,000 grant from the International Society of Transport Aircraft Training (ISTAT) Foundation, which funds educational programs that advance commercial aviation. This is the third year that WAI has received an ISTAT Foundation grant.

The grant will be used to expand the distribution of Aviation for Girls magazine and will identify the ISTAT Foundation as the sponsor of this year’s issue. With this grant, the number of copies printed will be increased and its distribution expanded in hard copy and digitally.
