Boeing Donates $50,000; Fund Will Increase Scholarships & Youth Outreach Programs

A generous $50,000 gift from The Boeing Company, in addition to several donations from individual WAI members, during the recent 30th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference in Long Beach, California, has helped the organization to reach its goal of $1 million in its Endowment Fund.

The fund enables WAI to expand the 2020 scholarship program, which will be available online July 1, 2019 (for which applications are due November 12, 2019). At the WAI 2019 conference, 156 scholarships were distributed to WAI members at every stage of life for academic use, lifestyle enhancement, and flight training including type ratings. A total of $875,065 in scholarships was awarded putting the total scholarships awarded since 1995 to more than $12 million.

WAI Adds Two New Board Members

Two new board members were voted in by Women in Aviation International members at the organization's 30 th annual membership meeting held in Long Beach, California. The two newly-elected board members, who will each serve a three-year term are Rhonda Larance and Shannon Weidekamp.

"Rhonda and Shannon bring years of experience, skills, and wisdom to our board,” says WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. “We welcome them as our new board members as they join a group of talented aviation industry professionals who help guide and shape Women in Aviation International."

Deadline to apply is May 31, 2019

Through a donor who wishes to be anonymous, Women in Aviation International offers five flight training scholarships available for application now through May 31, 2019. These scholarships include:

WAI Instrument or CFII Rating Scholarship; WAI Multi-Engine Rating or CFI Multi-Engine Endorsement Scholarship; WAI CFI Certificate Scholarship; WAI Private Pilot Scholarship; WAI Aircraft Maintenance Technician Scholarship.

For all five scholarships, if the applicant is a full-time student enrolled in high school, an accredited flight program, or an accredited college or university, she/he must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale). Funds will be paid directly to your flight school and training is to be completed within one year.

The 30th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference accomplished its goal to Connect. Engage. Inspire at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California, on March 14-16, 2019.

This conference marked 30 years since WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian hosted 150 people for the first conference in Prescott, Arizona, hosted by Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at the nearby Sheraton Hotel.

Women in Aviation International (WAI) has selected the 2019 inductees for its International Pioneer Hall of Fame. These women will be honored at the 30th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference, which will be held March 14-16, 2019, at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long Beach, California. The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, March 16, 2019, prior to the conference’s closing Celebration Dinner.

The 2019 Pioneer Hall of Fame inductes are Leanne Caret, Mary Golda Ross, and the U.S. Coast Guard's First Women Aviators and Aviation-Related Enlisted Women.

Fourth successful international outreach completed

Women in Aviation International’s chapters have been surveyed, and the results show that Girls in Aviation Day 2018 accomplished its goal of introducing a record number of girls ages 8 to 17 to the career and lifestyle possibilities in the aviation world. As in past years, Girls in Aviation Day was hosted by WAI chapters (including several located on college/university campuses) with additional participation by WAI corporate members including airlines, FBOs, aviation museums, and flight schools.

On October 13, 2018, 105 chapters and corporate members held 99 separate Girls in Aviation Day events including nine international chapters, 25 corporate member events, and 23 collegiate chapters. International events were held in 15 countries including Australia, Botswana, Canada, England, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Ireland, Kenya, Netherlands, Nigeria, Spain, United States, and Zambia.

Nearly $650,000 in scholarships will be awarded at WAI’s 30th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference, and the time to apply is now. To qualify for a scholarship, the applicant must be a WAI member as of November 1, 2018, and submit the application by November 12, 2018.

United Airlines' Girls in Aviation Day events span 2 continents and 6 countries

United Airlines will host hundreds of girls at a dozen airports served by the global airline in the United States and Europe as part of Women in Aviation International (WAI) Girls in Aviation Day. Throughout the airline’s international operation, United will welcome girls ages 8 to 17 from various nonprofit organizations to learn from women, shadow their day-to-day roles and hear about various career opportunities available in aviation. As part of the day, the girls will experience a behind-the-scenes look at United Airlines’ operations at a busy airport and see first-hand how exciting working in the aviation industry can be.

Funds used for Girls in Aviation Day participants about helicopters

Women in Aviation International (WAI) has received a $10,000 grant from Bell to help fund educational activities for WAI’s Girls in Aviation Day. Specifically, this grant is used to provide helicopter-oriented editorial content in WAI’s annual magazine Aviation for Girls and to provide hands-on educational activities including understanding rotary flight by experimenting with and flying whirly-gigs.
