As part of WAI’s efforts to enhance its youth outreach efforts and create more robust programming for its Girls in Aviation Day activities the organization has introduced the Aviation Girl fun patch for Girl Scouts. The patch is available through WAI chapters to Girl Scouts participating in Girls in Aviation Day activities, with the first patches being earned in Nashville, Tennessee during the International Women in Aviation Conference.

Karen Gebhart, vice president of business development for the Helicopter Association International, was elected to a two-year term as the chair of the WAI board of directors at the 2016 International Women in Aviation Conference. A veteran of three space shuttle flights, Dr. Rhea Seddon will speak to the energetic young audience during Girls in Aviation Day Nashville at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center on March 12.

Rhea was one of the first six women to enter the astronaut program. After leaving NASA in 1997, she became the assistant chief medical officer of the Vanderbilt Medical Group in Nashville where she led an innovative program to improve patient safety, quality of care, and team effectiveness by the use of an aviation-based model of CRM.

Former astronaut and fighter pilot Robert “Hoot” Gibson will speak at this year’s inaugural student luncheon on Friday, March 11, during the International Women in Aviation Conference.

Hoot flew five missions aboard space shuttles Challenger, Columbia, Atlantis, and Endeavour. He was a pilot for Southwest Airlines for 10 years, and has competed in the Reno National Championship Air Races since 1998 in the unlimited and jet classes, most recently winning the Unlimited Gold Race in Strega in September 2015
