Massive recruitment effort to ensure aviation’s next generation workforce

With 118 individual events presented worldwide, Women in Aviation International’s October 5 Girls in Aviation Day 2019 reached approximately 20,000 attendees. Truly an international event, Girls in Aviation Day was celebrated not just in the United States but in 17 other countries in Canada and Australia as well as countries in Africa, Asia, and Europe. Girls were introduced to the career and lifestyle possibilities in aviation and aerospace through meeting role models, career panels, exploring airplanes and airports, and a host of hands-on, fun activities ranging from a sectional chart treasure hunt to making jewelry using A&P tools.

"It takes a village…” to introduce aviation careers to thousands of girls worldwide

Participation in Girls in Aviation Day has spread far beyond the vision of the event five years ago as airports, FBOs, museums, universities and corporate members have joined WAI Chapters and Corporate Members to help spread the word that aviation and aerospace offer a rich variety of career choices for young women. Girls in Aviation Day is October 5, 2019, and will be celebrated worldwide.

Corporate WAI members join chapters to sponsor events

Women in Aviation International’s network of more than 110 chapters will be joined on Saturday, September 23, 2017, by some WAI corporate members to produce Girls in Aviation Day events. Celebrated worldwide, Girls in Aviation Day is designed to introduce and educate girls up to 17 years of age on the many career choices and lifestyle possibilities offered by the aviation/aerospace industry.

“Girls in Aviation Day has been embraced by the entire aviation community including pilots, airlines, aviation museums, FBOs, flight schools, colleges and universities, government officials and aviation businesses,” says WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. “This community effort speaks highly to the commitment we all feel to share our passion for aviation and create a diverse future aviation workforce.”

WAI chapters busy at work to plan memorable days for girls

Women in Aviation International has declared September 23, 2017, as the third annual Girls in Aviation Day where WAI chapters around the world host their own one-day event to attract more young women to the aviation and aerospace communities with a day of activities appealing to girls 8 to 17 years of age. This program is an outgrowth of the successful Girls in Aviation Day events held during the past five International Women in Aviation Conferences.

"Because each chapter has its own venues and resources, the chapter plans a Girls in Aviation Day event unique to them,” says WAI President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. "The creativity, organization and planning that the chapters devote to a successful event is a source of pride for us. Our chapters put their hearts into making a memorable day for the girls in their own communities.”

Participants in Women in Aviation International’s (WAI) Girls in Aviation Day will go home with a new skill: how to read a sectional chart. Through a generous donation from Sporty’s, thousands of instructional sectional charts will be distributed to WAI’s international network of more than 100 chapters. This hands-on teaching tool will be used with thousands of girls ages 8 to 17 who attend one of the many local Girls in Aviation Day events, scheduled for September 23, 2017 all over the globe.

The 28th Annual International Women in Aviation Conference accomplished its goal to Connect. Engage. Inspire. at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort In Lake Buena Vista, Florida, March 2-4, 2017.

"The accomplishments and the sophistication of our speakers this year was impressive. This year’s conference reflected the cutting edge of innovation and a passion for aviation,” said Women in Aviation International (WAI) President Dr. Peggy Chabrian. "Combining technology with the traditional enthusiasm and diversity of our attendees is an ideal formula for a successful conference.”

Women in Aviation International’s next Girls in Aviation Day is officially set for Saturday, September 23, 2017. With two years of successful experience in managing this international outreach, the third International Girls in Aviation Day is set to be enhanced and expanded to include more WAI chapters and corporate members.

On September 24, 2016, 71 Girls in Aviation Day events were held by 68 WAI chapters and corporate sponsors (15 of them held by collegiate sponsors), across the world with 17 events held by international chapters in Australia, Cameroon, Canada, Ghana, India, Kenya, Nigeria, Switzerland, and Zambia.
